The Rise of Skywalker Will Succeed no Matter how Bad it Actually Is.
Well, everyone else is talking about it so I probably should, too. The Rise of Skywalker, the final movie in the decades-spanning Star Wars saga and the official end to the story of Luke Skywalker and all the characters two generations grew up loving, premiers in five days as of this writing. I have seen far more Youtube videos about this movie than I ever saw about The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi combined.
Most of the press I've seen about The Last Jedi in the last few days has been negative, from both fans and the cast and crew. The whole PR campaign for the new film reads like people trying to erase what turned out to be a big mistake so it doesn't taint their attempt to make up for that mistake. JJ Abrams himself has gone on record as saying The Last Jedi didn't matter. John Boyega has agreed with the fans about Rey being a Mary Sue (a stance I, myself, stood against until this video completely shredded every argument I would normally make in her defense.) I suppose now that filming has wrapped and they've all declared themselves done with Star Wars altogether, they can say whatever they feel like without having to worry about PR backlash.
I've also heard about the supposed leaks that have saturated the internet ever since all this information started coming to light. And if any of those leaks are even remotely true, The Rise of Skywalker will be terrible. But here's the thing about that:
It doesn't matter.
The Star Wars fanbase has been through a lot with the release of the Disney trilogy of films, but Star Wars being the cultural phenomenon it is, name recognition alone will ensure that the movie makes enough money to fund more Star Wars projects for years to come. Solowas boycotted because of how bad The Last Jedi was, but Star Wars is the kind of story that you stay with to the end. I know I will be. After thirty years of being a Star Wars fan, I'm far too committed to not see the entire story through. Even if the movie does turn out bad , it can only mean that those who handle the franchise next will have nowhere to go but up, anyway, and if it's good it'll be a nice surprise.
Whether bad or good, however, the movie will make millions if not billions in the box officesimply because the fan base is that large, and that dedicated.
It's that simple.
